Not until 3 or 4 years ago did I start to like fem seeds. Use to swear by only regular seeds but can't tell a difference in growth so I accepted the easier route. I use half the starting materials soil/rockwool/coco etc. now as well since I don't have to start twice as many seeds.
Same conclusion I arrived at. Culling males just seems like a waste of time, space, and materials if you're not hunting for a male

I am fairly new to growing on my own. Is there any real difference between fem and regular besides the % of females present? I have read a whole lot about stress sensitivity, hardyness, and yield being slightly different, but in the same light Ive read people saying the flush is the most important step (lmao)

I am going to pop my first regular seeds this year either way, but I would love to hear everyones take. If someone has links to the actual science, that would be dope!
There is not going to be any noticable difference between females from fem seeds or regular seeds. If there is any it's not noticeable. I grow both preferring to grow regulars so I can make more seeds and collect pollen for making different crosses. I'll then take clones from good females and make feminized seeds to give to friends.

Some will say that I could just start with all fems and just reverse them for pollen to make crosses but I want the genetic diversity from using males and females to make more seeds. But I'm mainly doing reproduction runs of landraces and not just growing for stash. If all I wanted was a bag of weed I'd grow feminized seeds exclusively.

Damn I wish someone would give me 5 free females!
Feel I was lucky, I have never got that many regular seeds to be female, 14 our of 18.
I kept 5 and gave my buddy the remaining plants, he killed every one of them so I started a bunch of clones and he has 12 of the 16 clones I gave him. He is "still learning" although it has been about 5 years since I first showed him what to do. He is lazy and does not follow the protocol, has same lights as I use but he gets about just over half of what I harvest over the year. I have sort of given up on him to do the right things, so I will give him clones and let him just do his thing.

I used to only grow fems, but now really enjoy having the ability to f2 anything with hybrid vigor to unlock a wider variety of phenos.

Plus, with having free seeds I can do a 12/12 from seed run to check out expressions. That is something I wouldn’t do when paying $10 plus per seed.

last, if I chose to outcross to another strain, I believe using a f2 selection is more respectable and wiser than just using a male from the breeders pack.

Great stuff! Its good to hear other folks perspective on this, sheds light on things some of us never thought of (if we arent breeding). Years of info in this one post. Thanks for sharing :blsmoke:

thank you very much!
I have continuously maintained multiple grows for over a decade. And have held my favorite elite clone only cuts for over 6 years.
Cannabis is my life, and I’m greatful for having this online community! Keep on Growing!

What does f2 mean? I see this terminology used alot and I am not even sure what key terms to search for when trying to understand it

lol. It’s filial generation. Just like high school science class! There is a TON to learn about weed, and a lot of things we still don’t know about the plant and endocannabinoid system.

F2 just means seeds of the same batch were crossed. A male plant and a female plant that are technically siblings.
It’s not necessarily a good thing and actually bottlenecks the dna in a sense but it is a proven way to preserve genetics.
And, I have noticed most breeders selling f2 seeds for the SAME PRICE as their outcrosses :-( so at that point why not just do it yourself?
