Here is a quick example of a “ hybrid cup “ - Coco / Perlite solo cup - 50/50 split. One big plus to this is that root mass grabs the perlite making a transplant to either a full coco or full perlite container easy peasy.
Solo cup has a small hole on lower side to act as a DTW. Stupid simple.

Technically you could run an auto this way for a solo cup comp too.
This will also work well with cuttings established in a rooter plug - add clone ( rooter ) to this type of cup and get your grow on.

One obvious PLUS is good solo germination … you will get “ teen” size plants ready for transplant and or pollinating ( yes - you can make that solo grow a seed making momma ) may touch on that too .

This style of ready to plant plug can go straight into a 1 gallon bag for SOG grows. Plant is established and you can begin to run a 12/12 cycle.

Remember to keep things simple - let nature take the wheel. Notice how little i water around her not the whole cup. The lower part of cup will still be somewhat hydrated from the setup when i planted seed.

8 days from transplant time ( dec. 14 )
They are getting their legs annd are moving along nicely - growth going wide / leaf size increasing . Probably will have to bring my other tent ( QB 304 / COB rig ) on line pretty soon to help spread these plants out all ready. But ….. I might just try to setup tier level with back area plants raised and try to keep them in here for awhile longer. ( still got to cleanup other tent and other shit )
Although the QB 304 rig is a 3500k setup - good for veg and bloom but I tend to “ supplement “ bloom in this tent because boards have no red.
I have those G8 bloom booster leds ( 630-660nm ) for that job when needed.

Okay - today I had to move things around. They are growing well and needed some elbow room.
The plants are still on its original layered container mix with nothing but tap water . I will see in next 2 weeks what their container medium looks like in nute strength before doing a topdress.
Remember that once you form their base mix and plant is pushing forward there is no reason to add any other additive or bottled nonsense.
At the next watering , I will add a capful of Liquid Kelp to a gallon of water prior to use.
I couldn’t source the Kellogg’s Fish and Kelp ( discontinued ) that I usually use so I chose this one to try out.
So ….. the QB 304 / COB rig got brought back online .
The others stayed with the QB96 rig

Here is another question that gets thrown around RIU occasionally….. Kelvin rating for veg. Each grower has their preferences but for me , its kind of obvious.
My OG Quantum rig ( QB 304 with Citizen COBs ) run only 3500k and the QB96 rig has red .
This is why the QB304 is my go to veg rig. Kelvin spectrum leans a bit more blue and plants eat it up.
Much more vigor and growth. And this was just a couple of days since moving them in because of room in QB96 tent.
I plan to rotate the others into here to get some of that 3500k but you can see the difference in pic.

So let’s recap - plants shown are still on original layered container mix - NO additional feed used.
This highlights the fact that the medium alone can and will do the dirty work. I should also add that when I water … I do not water to runoff.
These felt bags do not need to be dripping wet. With just enough water to keep medium hydrated - that’s it. That’s why you do not see saucers or pans under plants.
Controlling your watering is another aspect of container growing whether grow bags or plastic containers. You can see the bags are not showing salt buildup either - which is a sign of overfeeding.
So roughly a month flew by and medium is still trucking along. I cannot speak about plant performance with another brand of soil but am sure it may vary. This why I stick to what works - Ocean Forest and Recipe 420. I say experiment with your particular soil blend.
These are photoperiod plants which also shows even autoflowers can be sustained with this simple setup.
No other nute lines or expensive fluff.

Training Day ;
Today they ( plants shown above ) start to be shaped. The growth has been rather good and we are already cranking on them to setup structure.
I like simple things ….. paper clips and cotton twine.
Using felt bags - it works fabulously. Paper clips provide a loop to tie down. Simple Shit.
Plants were topped once a couple weeks back and are already letting the lower / mid branches to grow out. Which starts the shape.
Some growers continue to top as they want - I tend to make symmetrical shapes if possible. There is no particular shape to shoot for … just break the typical Xmas tree shape early ( apical or terminal top ) so you get a flatter wider plant. You can keep adjusting branches as long as they are pliable.
LST ( Light Stress Training ) by tied down string is my main way to control. Supercrop / branch pinch is another.
