I'm fixing to build a 4'x6'x6' grow tent for my 4' 8 bulb T5 light.

Currently, I have 8 plants with most being indica dominant plants...I may lose some to males when I flower.

Is this fan from home depot sufficient enough to move the air effectively?

I will be making a home-made carbon filter and attaching it to ducting that will go out the bedroom window.

do not get those nor make your own carbon

it is best to do it right from the start this will advoid troubles later ............and if u upgrade those u were looking at are too small

here is the fan and the filter all in one buy ...............it is 4 inch (figure u wanted to save money)....they have a speed controller under the pic u can get that and will allow u to lower the speed on the fan and noise.............the speed controller only work on inline fans......not boosters (your first choice is called a booster will not work on those units)

now that unit will work great for your tent as long as u are T5s or LEDs

if u want to move to a HID then i am telling u now to invest in a 6 inch fan and filter combo ..........most hoods/cooltubes are 6inches so it is easier just to get 6 inches instead of messing with reducers and 2 sizes of ducting

this is all with a passive intake for the air ................just hang the filter up top run the ducting out to the fan (bolted to where u want ) and then out to the vent point

I guess you're saying, since it's going to cost me 30 for the booster fan and another 30 to make my own filter, save yourself the trouble and spend another 50 and get one made right, ready to go...I think, I'll take your advice.

Thanks for the link.

Plus, you want a fan that moves enough air to create a negative pressure in the tent.

that is called a booster fan
i have 2 of them but i use them as a powered intakes with filter boxes for the air

the speed controller will not work with those i know i tried

i know u are tring to save money ............but my honest answer is do not skimp on this if u are going a 6 inch then this is your bad boy

i owe this model myself ...............it is a 400 cfm they make all kinds of 400 cfm filters to match to it .......the speed controller works on it so the sound and the speed can be lowered at will..........this is the quiest one on the market with the ducting on and running it sounds like a fan on medium power i have slept in the room with it running

that model will last u more then enough grows to justify it and to pay for itself

if u try cheap it will cost more since u will have to keep what u have and order more .....what old growers told me and it is true

Is there that much of a difference between the 4'' and 6".

I know certain strains reek more than others, but I honestly don't think I'll grow more than 8 plant max at a time.

If the four inch should be sufficient for a 4x6x6 tent, how many plants or what size grow tent is needed for a 6"?

the only issuse u might have with a 4 inch vs a 6 inch

is if u decide to use a HID light (mh and hps bulbs)............most hoods/cooltubes are 6 inchs

but if u plan to stick with T5s or LEDs the 4 inch will do u great at a 170cfms
6x6x4 is 136 ...............so with the fan on full power u are replacing the air in the tent about once every 45secs (that is good means the plants are always getting fresh air .................even if u turn the 4 inch all the way to low u are still going to be moving more then enough air to keep the plants healthy and happy)
