My REZ is at 85F, anyone just go with it, or is this a huge problem?

Im new to hydro but not growing.

Im using a Turbo Garden, a nice compact design but the flood tray doubles as the lid for the rez, thus its directly under all that light. Im used to really high temps, 104F+

I had another thread a couple days ago, got questions answered, I was to told that as long as my water wasn't "slimy" i'm okay. Obviously organic applications would not be good here. Im using Bontanicare Power Flower and Grow, along with some other stuff. I did put Liquid Karma in there, probably not a good idea, next rez change it'll be gone.

Im aware of frozen bottles but they only bring temp down a couple degrees.
I dont have $ for a chiller not even a $300 used one.
I do use silica, Protekt.
I would like to separate them so the rez isn't under the light but the system is built to be stacked, i like the small design.

Im sure y'all who have done this for several years have dealt with this:shock:

IMG_3625.jpgYep its in my spare bathroom, my normal soil op is taking up the garage, i just pieced this together with spare parts. I know I should have the electric components above water level, had to set this one up real quick. Ill fix.
IMG_3626.jpgAs you can see I have a couple projects going on. Side by Side of Super Soil with RO water, Bio-Canna and General Organics. Now for some reason i felt the necessity to start hydro using EDTA chelated nutrients, I guess i got tired of all this organic hype going on in my town.

I'd say you have to find a way to drop your res temp by ten degrees or more.

You might want to raise your light a little. Where's that exhaust going? Try blowing your light through it and/or adding fans to circulate the air.

I had an extra fan/filter combo screwed together, so i set it on end pointing up, and took the fan built into the bathroom out of the ceiling, screwed in a 6in flange and connected it. so i assume its going strait out the roof just like all bathroom fans.

Like I said this is just a trial run all my good equipment is in the garage running my soil op. This is just extra parts. Its only a 400w, so thats 66.66WPF with the turbo garden being 2ftx3ft.
so i cant use an air cooled hood yet, soil crop is still 1.5mo out.

Just lookn for a little, easy way out of the high temps for now for this makeshift grow room. Can i just DEAL with it using H2O2 and silica? No organics....

You might be able to get away with it, but it's taking a risk. How difficult would it be to upsize your res underneath? If you got your res up to ten gallons or so, I think it could help.

Im not sure I understand what your saying, but I'm interested in the advice! My Rez is a 25gal, I put only 20gal in there.

So your saying to up size it to a 35gal total? ( add 10 to the 25?)

I have a couple 2.5 gal jugs, what if I reduced the 24/0 to a 18/6 so it has a cool down period, and every morning ( well morning for the plants that is ) I put a 2.5gal frozen jug in there?

THOSE OF YOU THAT USE FROZEN WATER BOTTLES: how long do you think a 2.5gal jug would stay cool with my kinda temps?

Sorry, didn't know that res was so large. If you're running 20 gallons of water, that's a pretty good amount. I was just suggesting increasing the body of water to help maintain a cooler temp.

If you froze a 2.5 gallon jug and stuck it in there, you would have significant temperature decrease for a pretty good duration, exactly how long you can only find out by trying. I would say give it a go. It won't cost you any $ to try it.

i have used up to 3 or 4 2liter frozen bottles before depending on res size. your key is to at least break the hot cycle once a day and that will greatly increase your odds. at this point dont worry about constant temps below 70 just add one or two of those bottles at lights on and lights off to not let the water stay at that high temp.

I would modify the system and put another smaller reservoir outside the room connected to the present reservoir by a couple hoses. I would constantly circulate the solution between the reservoirs AND I would insulate both reservoirs and use frozen water bottles.

i had a similar problem and made it so my system shuts off for an hour a day. It makes a big difference especially if your resevoir is close to the ground :)

Okay so I'm going to freez that 2.5gal jug and try it. Your right it won't cost me a thing, and I am going to reduce the hours to 18/6 so there is a cool down period. I'll make their night our noon obviously. I'll pop that jug in right when the lights click on let's say... 5pm. I'll post back after having done this and let y'all know how it worked out for me. In the meantime ima get some h2o2, sounds like a must.

I've ran plants with 75-80 degree water this summer in DWC. Plant survived with bi-weekly water changes. I'd imagine F&D would be less susceptible to hot water issues as the roots aren't constantly in the water.

also get one of those window insulated reflectors you place in your windshield during the day. if you measure it out and cut it correctly around your resevoir, it helps a ton!! cool water will make your roots happy. research into dutch master zone.

Yep im finding that MJ is a survivor, like I said in the beginning of this thread I have been dealing with really hot temp for ever. My temp are okay no problems so far, in-fact I transplanted these clones into the F&D the same time I put the SAME batch of clones in my normal Roots organic soil, the hydro are twice the size!

I froze the 2.5 gal jug, doing my first rez drain and refill tonight i will put it in there then, Im also only going to put maybe 10 gal in there, I topped of the 20 gals i put in there initially half way through the week with super cold RO water full of CaMg and silica cuz i noticed a deficiency. There was only like 3gal that needed to be replaced. So i know as they get bigger they will need more water but 20 gal for baby clones is ridicules.

All in the hydro learning curve.

The issue with warmer res temps are they hold less D.O. (dissolved oxygen) and pathogens can thrive. If your adding enough air and using something such as H202 to control pathogens, you shouldn't have a problem. The warmer the water, the more air you will have to add, walmart pumps will not get the job done in this case.

warmer water in a flood and drain isnt even an issue unless its causing slime or other disease. pop some airstones in your res and use h202 or DM Zone.

^^^This. Do this: Im not novice and know exactly what you're experiencing....... Don't Fk around with frozen bottles or any of that bullsh*t. It won't do anything but bring temps down, melt and then go back up- who has the time for that ???? You either need to save up for a chiller OR OXYGENATE YOUR REZ! The higher temps are detrimental to your plants WHY ? Because the higher temps rob the oxygen in the water! That is why!!! So....... Manufacture more Oxygen! Put in 5-10-20......Jam in as many pumps and airstones as your budget can afford! Make the rez roar with oxygenated water!!!!!!!! LISTEN TO ME. AFTER THIS If your rez temps remain high then its not that big a deal.....Your plants will do fine with the additional oxygen. Now if you could get the temps down and add oxygen NOW YOU ARE TALKING!!! BUT in your situation.....Do the above. I promise you it will work...... Bottles are not the solution unless you want to swap them out 9times a day every day---(nonsense)

water can only hold so much dissolved oxygen and then temperature plays a huge role in how much it can hold. 65* water will have many times more do than 75*water. jamming as many airstones as you can in a res does not solve the problem as much as temp does.

i like this idea. if you put your pump in the outside res, let your tray drain to your current res, the hydrostatic pressure will push the solution to the outer res again, which is constantly pumping water out again. then you won't need a second pump to circulate between the two res'es. make sure that passive outflow from the current res to the outside res is 1" wide or the current res might overflow.

also, elevate your filter/fan. you're exhausting the coolest air in the room (on the floor) out of the room. my guess is that central ac/heat vent is not plugged. that room needs to be airtight except for a designated intake. make sure that intake is drawing the coolest air that you have access to from that room, like an adjacent room. and to keep dust, mold spores, pests out, it's preferable that the intake be filtered.

two 12x12" filtered intakes hidden in a closet in a room adjacent to my grow room. top one is for air-cooled reflectors, connected via 6" duct. bottom one is for the room, connected to an 8" duct along the floor that brings the coolest air right next to the plants.

my grow room exhaust inlet/filter is practically against the ceiling. 6" 400cfm fan exhausts the reflectors to the attic and another fan of same size exhausts the room to the attic. the reflector fan is running at about 80% speed and the room is running at about 50%, controlled by solid state variable speed fan motor controls.
