How good is a peltier?

I had an idea for keeping my water cool without spending for a water chiller yet. Anyone have any experience with a peltier? Know how much it is capable of keeping cool? And aren't they not too expensive?

Other than pumping the water a foot or two above the res and doing a waterfall, I don't think you're going to have a lot of luck. Blowing air across the surface of your res with a fan will also help. Both of these tactics take advantage of evaporative cooling, which will be most effective in dry conditions.

Peltier cooling is very inefficient and only works if you have a lot of excess waste heat from another process.

Peltier about the worst way you can go unless you have free power and are going to set up a water cooling loop to cool the hot side of the peltier.

Well here was my idea. I found a cooler the other day from like the 50s it's made of steel. I was thinking if I got a few peltier and strapped them to the outside got a water pump to pump it through the rest and so fourth. I like to come here and ask questions before I commit to any money spent or holes drilled.
