Can Fan/filter question

Skunk smell

Well-Known Member
I am currently growing in my basement, with no tent.I am using a 1000w hps,and I am trying to get control of the odor,it's starting to find it's way upstairs. If I get a can fan with a carbon filter,do I have to exhaust the air outside,or can I just recirculate it within the grow area?I am just trying to avoid having to run a large exhaust out the side of my house if possible.Any help will be appreciated!

This is why people use tents or build small corner rooms. You have to have it sealed enough to pull the smell through the filter. The path of least resistance...

If you don't exhaust through a carbon to the outside, it'll pump heated air in the room. You'll be fighting a room temperature past 80°f+. All the system will do is push heated air around.

Vented to the outside gets rid of the excess heat. I recommend venting through the roof. They make 6" recess lighting. So cutting a 6" hole in the ceiling can be filled if you take the system down. Run the exhaust up through the ceiling and let it heat the attic instead.

Mine exhausts outside, running 2 6" filters on 2 1000w HPS fixtures, still stanky out back.... time to replace my charcoal I think....

You 'CAN' use a pair of filters and a fan to 'scrub' the air, but its kinda wasteful, and as others stated, doesnt remotely help the buildup of heat.... plants thrive best @ like 72f (unless you are enriching with CO2, then warm helps)

Venting hot humid air into your attic is problematic in a couple of ways. The excess humidity causes mold and eventually dry rot and if you live in a cold climate frost builds up all winter then melts in the spring leaking thru the ceiling and basically destroying the whole house. I did the attic venting thing in my garage 15 years ago so I know first hand how lousy that works.

You have to get the filtered air outside or there will be heat and moisture buildup in the grow room. A/C can take care of those but it too needs to be vented so we're back to square one unless you can install a window A/C that recirculates the air in the room to cool it and remove some moisture. Then you need CO2 to replenish what the plants use if no fresh air comes into the room. Always something.

Works excellent in Texas. It's already 135° in the attic. Vented 50% humidity is gone in a matter of minutes.

Outside temperature is 93°, 28%. Grow space is 71°, 55%.

You can definitely recirculate it. You'll need an AC and maybe a dehumidifier, but you can. And if you're doing that, might as well throw in some CO2, then the temps can be higher.
