I thought some of you backyard growers might be interested in my Redneck Rain Gutter Grow System. Instead of a rain gutter, I make a trough with black plastic sheeting and 4X4 posts. I have a float valve somewhere, and when I find it, I will just turn the hose on and leave it. With buckets, about 2-3 inches of water works best. I used an old hog panel for a trellis. {tomatoes are 6 Pruden's Purple, 1 Yellow Pear and 4 Brandywine}

Cool. Does that keep the soil sufficiently moist?

Yes. I just drill holes in the buckets, and keep the water a couple inches deep all the time. This is the best tomato growing method I have ever tried. I bet it would work with weed too.
Nice. I'm all for any method that makes for less work throughout the season. My tomatoes are in fabric pots, and they seem to love it, but I do have to water more often, especially with the heat creeping into the 90's.

The last two years I used the Walmart shopping bags. They work alright, but need to be a little taller. 1-2 inches of water worked best with them. Also you just get one year out of the bags. The buckets are mostly old ones that I had to retire from the woods, with a few new ones mixed in.

I started the JP patch. All of them got LOB'd.

The fourth one stayed home. Or at least nearby. It was looking puny, and I figured in this location it would get more care, and if it still looked bad, it would be easy to kill. Notice the tip is turned up already. I planted this about 2000 last night, and took the picture at 0545 this morning.

So I've about got my fence built. It's 20 feet wide in the front by 40 long and 33 feet in the back. Got my plants ready for transplant into 100 gallon pots this year. I've got killer grape, cheese quake, sense star, strawberry banana, blue dot and pure ak. Hope everyone has a great year and check out my grow in the organic section.
