Looking for internship

Hello you guys,

My first post here and already asking for a huge favor:
I'm an 25 year old communication & multimedia design student & cannabis enthousiast from Holland. Currently they're passing a bill over here for regulation of marijuana distribution. I'm convinced that in a few years we will fully legalize cannabis and I'm hoping to take advantage of this situation by educating myself as much as possible. I'm planning to follow an internship in the USA at a company which is active in the cannabis industry. Most preferably as a graphic designer, audiovisual designer of marketeer. Does anybody over here know anything about internships at these kind of businesses?

hey there definitelynotacop,

You might want to build some sort of reputation first there bud. You don't just get set on top of the pyramid. You start from the bottom then go all the way up.

Don't know what "internship" means in your mind but it is definitely not "top of the pyramid". He is asking for internship opportunities in cannabis industry based in USA.

Hey man, I am not very knowledgeable about visa situation between Holland and USA but it may be hard to get a work permit for a cannabis company. Without a work visa you would be working illegally, tourist visa.(most wont accept it, being cannabis industry they are even under a more watchful eye) I highly doubt companies will go into so much trouble to try and bring you here. From your age I can guess that you would be applying for an entry level position which makes it even harder. Some countries have special agreements with USA to exchange students for internships abroad but I highly doubt cannabis industry is in that list.

Come on dude, why does a graphic designer need a job in the cannabis industry, go get a job at a major ad firm. I'd be more willing to hire someone with real credentials.

This shit don't make sense. COP

I'm sorry definitelynotparanoid. Just looking for opportunities in the industry. Not especially the growing sector but as far as I know the market is much more than only that. Surely I could apply for a job at a major ad firm but I'm not willing to sell my soul to any brand that needs a commercial just to make money. Thanks anyway for making clear that my quest will be quite difficult.

Email some MMJ companies. You should learn how to create a web site to post your design work and use it as a portfolio. You are a graphics designer so you can use those skills for any industry. Marketing? Learn web marketing, SEO and other skills.

If you just like pot then those are not marketable skills.

What doesnt make sense is you calling the dude a cop. Please tell me what about the things he said makes you think he is a cop.... Dude is looking for a legit intern position at a company within the cannabis field, how is that even a little shady?

he's a marketing professional posting on RIU seeking help in marketing himself to a Cannabis company. Communication specialist looking on an internet forum for connections in the Cannabis industry.

Provides 0 links to prove anything about what he says is even remotely true.

If not a cop then is seriously lacking in the skills that the position he wants require.

most likely to get stuff shipped to him in Holland so the DEA can come down on them state side. The ol " send me some gear so I can photograph it and put it on the website and market it to the coffee shops" Get them on international charges. The DEA's job is getting harder stateside they need to bait people into more intricate things as busting some of these medical guys is a lot of work but nailing them for shipping shit over seas would be an ez win.

Why would anyone in the USA hire a guy from Holland and deal with all the visa issues associated with employment in Cannabis when these people are readily available state side in droves? Why wouldn't he go to somewhere in Europe that is doing this legally? Why not get a job at Greenhouse? There's plenty of seed companies there....

Maybe dudes just an idiot, you build connections in this hobby, you kinda gotta know people. That goes with years of cultivating relationships with folks, not just plants. There's levels to this shit...

Dude, does your imagination have any limits? You should get a job at the DEA yourself, you're quite innovative.
As for the job searching in Europe: opportunities over here basically end at seed companies. There are some areas where medical marijuana is "legal" but advertising for prescription medicine is not really a "thing" over here (I know that is hard to imagine for some people). Also, why wouldn't I wanna go to the USA? It's kind of the place to be at the moment for this industry right?
Also, nice metaphor man. On the cultivating relationships thingy. Quite creative. Not sure how to cultivate those kind of relationships with an ocean in between tho.

To everyone else:
Thanks for the advice so far. I'm currently orienting myself more and try to make sense of the laws in the USA and what is necessary to even get close to my goals. I will be trying to get a visa as an intern (so as a student) so I won't need to make any money at the company i'll be an intern at. Not in it for the money to be honest. Just the experience. Maybe this will make it a bit easier to get a visa. Only one way to find out I guess.

Currently working on my portfolio website and resume aswel and trying to find businesses to be an intern at. Any advice is still welcome ofcourse!

the only thing you got going here is you are Dutch

so can ride the wave and rep of the Dutch being masters at plants

but unless you got skills in Hort.

you are screwed

get some study in at home(see cannabis university and others)

to gleen ur CV

little is required from 'artists' as they are very very cheap in the us

and is all outsourced or agency work

good luck
